More Money than Brains: The Halston Story

An article on the hintmag.com blog claims that designer Olivier Theyskens is headed to Halston. After being let go by Nina Ricci, Theyskens made the headlines when Anna Wintour herself wrote a letter to the company’s bigwigs to essentially tell them that they were idiots.
I agreed with Anna; Theyskens was the perfect fit at the French label. However, the designer has absolutely nothing to do with the brand identity of Halston. So, is he destined to work with idiots everywhere he goes?
Harvey Weinstein, Tamara Mellon and Bonnie Takhar are currently calling the shots at the label — as far as business is concerned, anyway. Design-wise, a “creative team” has been responsible for the label’s output. I respect what the three executives have done in the past (they all have a lot more money than me, after all), but this move is idiotic. If they want Theyskens, then they should put their money on Theyskens and create an eponymous label for him. If anyone is going to resurrect Halston, it’s going to be someone else; someone whose designs reflect the modern American sensibilities that defined the label when it was successful.
Anyone who reads my blog knows that I love to hate Louis Vuitton. On the other hand, I hate to hate Halston. I want the brand to be every bit as chic as it was when Roy Halston was alive. But every time I read something about the label I get angry with Weinstein, Mellon and Takhar. What in the name of Zob are these people thinking?
