March 1991

Cover: March 1991

Context: An amateur videographer captures the beating of Rodney King by Los Angeles police officers on March 3.  Janet Jackson signs a $30 million recording contract with Virgin Records, making her the highest-paid female recording artist of all time.  Less than two weeks later, on March 20, her brother Michael Jackson would sign a $1 billion contract with Sony.  On March 13, Exxon agrees to pay $1 billion for the clean-up of the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska’s Prince William Sound.

Points of Interest: The reinvention of the Chanel suit (like the one shown on the cover) was the key factor in revitalizing the brand during this era.  It was all uphill for Karl Lagerfeld after this.

What Tyra Would Say: ”Two beautiful girls stand before me, but I only have one photo in my hands.  Carla, I have a feeling we’ve seen this angle from you before.  A top model needs to have more than one look.  Becky, you take terribly dull photos and you move like a three-toed sloth in front of the cameras, but the judges continue to see something special in you — despite all evidence to the contrary.  So who stays and who goes?”

What Auntie Fashion Says:Special Kids Section“?  I loved everything about this cover until I read that.  What do kids have to do with fashion?
