Old Lady Lands “Vogue” Cover
For the first time since 1989, a black woman is on the cover of the American ”Vogue” September issue.
I know that’s big news for a lot of reasons, but I’m more impressed that a forty-four-year-old woman has landed a “Vogue” cover (her birthday is in two days). “Vogue” has had women who were pushing forty on recent September issues (Sarah Jessica Parker was already forty on her 2005 cover), but this cover will make Berry the oldest woman by far to appear on the cover of the coveted edition in the past ten years.
Back in the early 80s, the September issue would have featured a model instead of an actress, and it was likely that the cover model was a teenager, like Brooke Shields.
So let’s not let the race of the cover model become the only reason to celebrate this groundbreaking September issue. This is a victory for middle-aged women everywhere, regardless of the color of their wrinkled, old skin.
