Dalma

Supermodel rivalries are mostly made up in the heads of the supermodels — take Naomi and Tyra, for example.  If there ever was a genuine rivalry between two models, however, those models would have to be Dalma Callado and Iman.

There was probably nothing personal between the two beauties (they could have been best friends for all I know), but on the ’70s and ’80s runways of such luminaries as Valentino, Bill Blass and Yves Saint Laurent, there was always an unspoken competition to prove who could be the most fabulous.  If you only knew the names of two runway models in 1979, you knew the names of Dalma and Iman.

In my opinion, Dalma was the winner of the catwalk contest.  I’m sure some people will disagree with me, but I don’t know if I’ve ever seen anyone walk in heels with as much innate elegance as the original Brazilian bombshell did.  There has never been anyone quite like her.

  1. I am aware of the two but I hardly think they need to be thought of a competition. They were fiercesome to look at non the less. I think there are several other models to add to the mix. They each become individual icons. I think Pat Cleveland, Alva Chinn, Amalia, Rebecca Ayoko, Mounia, Katoucha etc make it impossible for a real competitive discussion.

I dont know maybe im wrong

    • And please do not forget ANNA BAYLE she is one of the top 3 supermodels and designers favorite casting for her professionalism. Check her website annabayle.com how quintessential she is on the runway. She is a silent superstar of the runway.

  2. They were all great and no one had a walk as bad as Anna Bayle, Pat Cleveland, Mounia and Sonia Cole. Boy, do I miss those days! I’ve got to find better quality videos of the runways of the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s.

  4. Iman and Dalma did know each other and were friends! They were both guests at my house in the Hamptons on several occasions in the mid eighties. I met them through a close fiend and celebrated decorator, David Solomon. Both woman are extraordinary beautiful and were a delight in every sense! Ahhh… The good old days!

    • Wonderful! As I mentioned in the post, I used to watch the two of them all the time and try to decide for myself who was better. I still think that Dalma was the best walker in the history of the business, but Iman’s portfolio is more impressive to me. Nevertheless, you could always see that the two of them knew that no one else could touch them when it came to the skills that paid the bills.

  6. Dalma Callado — the greatest model of all time, with an elegance and lissom swagger that transcends a photograph and remains, like magic, out there in the firmament. If Dalma were to appear in a high fashion magazine today, she would still take your breath away and make the exquisite couture come alive. It’s a rare quality that goes beyond her fabulous looks. Bravo, Dalma!

  7. Long before the days of Youtube, there was Video Fashion Monthy and Style with Elsa Klensch. That said, I’ve watched, many, many fashions shows from the 70’s & 80’s. The other commenter bought up other amazing, incredible models of that era, as far as Iman & Dalma are concerned, I think Dalma was the better runway model. Iman, however achieved much greater commercial success and became an icon of sorts and is still very much visible today. Dalma, although the better “walker,” is a relative obscure name.

    • I agree that she was the best on the runway. She could make my jaw drop just by unbuttoning a coat.

  8. Dalma had something above the others. Iman was fabulous but Dalma took it up to another fashion level. Her elegance, physique, beauty, grace, and sexuality was unmatched!

  9. Ahhh. Katouche is the quintessential runway model back then for me. She presented any dress with so much elegance!
