Coco Rocha + Elle Canada = Weird

Elle Canada

On the cover of the upcoming issue of “Elle Canada,” everyone’s favorite model, Coco Rocha, is striking a pose that I can only describe as weird.  Known as being one of the best movers in the world, Rocha is also celebrated for her ability to sell a garment.  Yet on this cover there’s something wrong with that hand dangling in front of her crotch.  It doesn’t make me want to pick up the magazine to see more.

It reminds me of her other “Elle Canada” cover where her head almost looked as if it was on backwards.  It also reminds me of every other fashion photograph where the model is doing something completely awkward because the creative team equates awkwardness with high fashion.

It’s not always necessary to make a model look weird in order to make her look stylish.  In my favorite campaign of recent memory, Karlie Kloss for Dior S/S 2011, there’s not an awkward pose in the bunch.  On my recent trip to Las Vegas I encountered wall-sized images from the campaign adorning the Dior boutique in the Wynn Esplanade and they took my breath away.

Beauty doesn’t always have to be about being awkward or different.  Sometimes being beautiful is more than enough.  I wish that “Elle Canada” would figure that out.  I don’t like the creative direction of the magazine.
