Well, at least it’s something . . .
I didn’t watch last night’s Golden Globes, and I didn’t pay much attention to what was happening on the red carpet. So when I started clicking through an online slideshow this morning I was expecting to see a surprise or two. How disappointed I was! The only dresses I really liked were a couple of Gucci numbers that looked as if they were culled from the Tom Ford for Gucci archive. Oh yeah — there was that one Tom Ford dress, too. Most everything else was sort of dull.
Then I went to another site where I realized that Emma Watson’s dress looked like this from behind. You couldn’t wipe the smile off my face! It’s like the sartorial equivalent of the finale of “Grease.”
I have not been the biggest fan of Raf Simons for Christian Dior, although he has designed one of my favorite dresses of the entire decade so far. Yet his last couple of shows at Jil Sander were terrific for displaying a curious sense of restrained perversity. He’s at his best when he’s making you realize that there’s a lot more to the woman than the dress that she’s wearing.
This was Emma Watson’s first major red carpet appearance in the U.S.A. I’m finally interested in her, and I’m also warming up to Raf Simons for Dior if this is where he’s going. Well done, everyone!
