Happy birthday, Gregory Smith.  I see you got your start in show biz when you appeared in a detergent commercial as an infant.  I knew that you reminded me of Marilyn Chambers for some reason . . .

Happy birthday, Mindy Kaling.  I suppose that I’d join “The Cult of Mindy Kaling” if I wasn’t too busy running my own . . .

Happy birthday, Don Rickles.  You know, I’m not really into your particular brand of “insult comedy.”  When I tell people they’re fat, I’m doing it as a public service . . .

Happy birthday, Olivia Hussey.  Once again, a celebrity’s birthday has reminded me of how much I would like to live my life in a film based upon an Agatha Christie novel.  Thanks for being there for me!

Happy birthday, Tiffani Amber Thiessen.  I know that you’ve dropped your middle name for professional reasons, but it’s difficult for me to call you anything else.  Plus, there’s that tattoo on my ass . . .

Happy birthday, Sharon Cuneta.  To be honest, I didn’t even know who you were until I read your biography just a moment ago.  After learning a little more about you, however, I’m convinced that we’re identical twins, separated at birth.  How many other people can call themselves a “megastar” with such a straight face?

Happy birthday, Deborah Foreman.  I’m not sure if you chose Roger over Richie, Fred, David and Bob, but I do know that I would have picked the guy in the headband . . .

Canada Becomes Even More Unfashionable

leave a comment »

Jeanne Beker

If I didn’t just read it on fashionmagazine.com (click the link above), I wouldn’t have believed it.

Bell Media has cancelled “Fashion Television.”  Canada, once the home of the two best shows about fashion in the entire world, is now the home of none.  After twenty-seven years, they’ve pulled the plug on the only decent TV show about fashion since “Fashion File” bit the big one a few years back after they failed to make me the host.

Just yesterday I was telling someone that people up here dress like slobs.  It’s unfortunate, but it’s true.  I live a few minutes away from the biggest mall on the continent, and every time I’m there I’m amazed when I see someone with a genuine sense of style.  A couple of days ago I saw a hipster guy who sort of looked like Charles Manson-meets-Mr. Rogers.  My jaw nearly hit the floor because I didn’t expect to see anyone wearing anything that could surprise me.  I also saw a woman working in a high-end boutique wearing some thigh high riding boots in a failed attempt to look like she just wandered in from a Ralph Lauren runway show, but at least she tried.  I don’t see many people trying up here.  They don’t dress to impress.  This is the capital of casual slovenliness.

So I guess that I shouldn’t be surprised that Bell Media gave up on “Fashion Television.”  As the saying goes, all good things must come to an end.  Now maybe Jeanne Beker can retire and give someone else in this country the opportunity to have a job in the fashion business.  Of course, she’d have to quit her other ten jobs first . . .
